When hope was lost

On September 1, 2019, Hurricane Dorian made landfall on the southern end of Elbow Cay with Category 5 intensity and proceeded to stall over the island for 36 heart-wrenching hours, leaving a path of destruction never seen before in the history of The Bahamas. Elbow Cay – anchored by Hope Town, the island’s main village and harbor – was the cultural epicenter of The Bahamas’ Abaco Islands.

Despite spending decades touring some of the most crisis-ridden places in the world, Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres exclaimed, “I’ve never seen such a level of systematic devastation,” after visiting Abaco in the immediate aftermath of Dorian.

Dorian’s harrowing stats

  • Category 5 intensity
  • 185 mph (295 km/h) maximum sustained winds
  • Storm surge water levels of 20+ ft above ground
  • $3.4 billion in damage
  • 70 dead (60 on Abaco alone)
  • 70,000 homeless

Rebuilding hope

Hope Town Primary School was demolished by Hurricane Dorian. While rebuilding the school has been one of Hope Town United’s top charity project priorities, evacuating more than 250 Elbow Cay residents and delivering over 50 tons of critical supplies in the immediate aftermath of the storm – as well as rebuilding and reopening the front doors to the island, the public docks, to allow materials, resources, and commerce to flow more freely – have taken necessary precedence to enable the community as a whole to lift itself up and begin to heal.

That said, the two main goals of the Hope Town Primary School charity project have been 1) to preserve as much of the historic structure of the original school as possible and 2) to construct a resilient educational facility that doubles as a storm shelter. We are 80% completed, having raised $1.5M since Dorian hit in September 2019, but we still need your help, or the school will not open its doors before the Bahamian government lifts the COVID virtual learning order. The quicker the children of Hope Town can return to school safely, the quicker life will feel like it has returned to normal – not only in the wake of Hurricane Dorian, but also in the wake of a global pandemic. As many early childhood educators know, a safe space in which to learn is as important as nutritious food is for the growth and development of young minds.

“On a small island like ours, everyone is invested in the primary school. It’s the heart of our community. Once families are able to return and the children of Hope Town are back where they call home – life will feel a little more normal.” – Justin Higgs, Principal of Hope Town Primary School
